Donor-Advised Funds: A Flexible Way to Support Veterinarians Without Borders Canada

What is a Donor-Advised Fund (DAF)?

A Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) is a charitable giving vehicle that allows donors to make charitable contributions, receive an immediate tax benefit, and then recommend grants from the fund over time. It's an easy, cost-effective way to manage your charitable giving.

Benefits of using a DAF

  • Can contribute cash and/or assets (stocks) and the donor is eligible for an income tax benefit using the full-market value of the asset.
  • If donating assets held for more than one year the donor can eliminate capital gains tax.
  • Donors contributing cash can take a deduction of up to 60% of gross income.
  • Can remain anonymous.

How to give through a DAF

  1. Establish your DAF: If you don't already have a DAF, you can establish one with a sponsoring organization, such as a community foundation or a financial institution.
  2. Contribute to your DAF: Make an irrevocable, tax-deductible contribution to your DAF. Contributions can be made with cash, stocks, or other assets.
  3. Recommend a grant: Once your DAF is funded, you can recommend grants to Veterinarians Without Borders Canada. Provide the following information to your DAF sponsor:
    • Charity Name: Veterinarians Without Borders/Vétérinaires Sans Frontières Canada
    • Address: 400 Industrial Ave, Suite 410, Ottawa, K1G 0Y9
    • Charity Registration Number: 84146 9547 RR0001
  4. Inform us: Let us know about your grant recommendation so we can acknowledge your generosity and ensure the funds are directed to your preferred programs.
