At any given time, Veterinarians Without Borders North America (VWB) is implementing multiple projects around the world, each designed to respond to the specific needs of animals and the communities that rely on them.
Some initiatives, like Volunteers Engaged in Gender-Responsive Technical Solutions (VETS), are long-term programs delivered in partnership with local organizations and international volunteers. Operating in Cambodia, Ghana, Kenya, Laos, Senegal, and Vietnam, VETS strengthens animal health systems, supports livelihoods, and promotes gender-responsive, locally led solutions.
In South Sudan, VWB works with pastoralist communities to strengthen resilience to animal diseases—including zoonoses and antimicrobial resistance—while improving food security and economic stability through sustainable livestock practices.
In Rwanda and Senegal, we collaborate closely with local partners to support communities in preventing, detecting, and responding to priority zoonotic diseases such as anthrax and cysticercosis.
Across Northern Canada, VWB’s Northern Animal Health Initiative focuses on improving companion animal health and access to veterinary services in remote and underserved communities. Through a collaborative, community-led model, the program builds local capacity and supports lasting improvements in both animal and public health.
In Ukraine, VWB partners with shelters, veterinary teams, and agricultural initiatives to strengthen animal health systems and livelihoods amid ongoing conflict.
Alongside these programmatic efforts, VWB plays an important role in global emergency response. From disease outbreaks to wildfires and humanitarian crises, we work with partners to deliver urgent veterinary care and support to animals and communities in distress.
Across all contexts, one principle remains constant: VWB’s commitment to a One Health approach that recognizes the interconnected health of animals, people, and the environment. Through partnership, local leadership, and shared expertise, we are building capacity for a healthier, more resilient future.

Meet Dr. Joseph Ansong-Danquah, a Ghanaian-Canadian veterinarian who has volunteered with VWB in Ghana since 2017. In 2026, Joseph is completing his final VETS placement after nine years of supporting farmers, communities, partner organizations and fellow volunteers across the country.
