OTTAWA, ON, November 14, 2024 – Veterinarians Without Borders North America (VWB) has launched its Giving Tuesday campaign, dedicated to providing essential veterinary care for animals across Canada’s northern regions, including Nunavut and the Northwest Territories, and beyond. Through to December 3, 2024, each donation will be matched by a generous donor*, doubling the impact of every contribution to support animals and communities in need.

Access to veterinary care is a challenge in remote northern communities, and VWB’s Northern Animal Health Initiative aims to bridge this gap by delivering critical services such as vaccinations, spay/neuter surgeries, and wellness check-ups. These services are essential for preventing the spread of disease, controlling animal populations, and ensuring the health and safety of both animals and people in these regions.

“Giving Tuesday is an incredibly important day for us in raising awareness and funding for animals in need,” said Charmaine Brett, Executive Director of VWB. “Our Northern Animal Health Initiative provides a lifeline for animals and pet guardians in remote communities who often face significant barriers to accessing veterinary care. This work is part of our broader One Health mission, which seeks to build healthier communities through healthier animals, people, and environments.”

Brett emphasizes that each matched donation has a multiplied impact: “With each Giving Tuesday gift, donors can double their support for dogs, cats, cows, chickens, goats, and other animals that otherwise would have no access to veterinary services. By helping these animals, our supporters are strengthening the well-being of entire communities that depend on animals for companionship and economic livelihoods,” added Brett.

From now until midnight ET on December 3rd, VWB invites all animal lovers, community members, and supporters to contribute to the campaign. Every donation supports crucial programs that reach animals and communities in some of the most underserved regions in North America.

*Donations will be matched up to $35,000 until Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at 12 midnight EST thanks to Tito’s Handmade Vodka and our anonymous match donors.

About Veterinarians Without Borders North America/Vétérinaires Sans Frontières Amerique du Nord

Using a One Health approach, Veterinarians Without Borders (VWB) works for, and with, communities in need to foster the health of animals, people and the environments that sustain us. VWB works in Africa and Asia to improve the living conditions of the most disadvantaged rural populations through veterinary and agricultural services, sustainable animal production, training, value chain development and sustainable natural resource management. Additionally, we support remote Northern Canadian communities to improve animal health through temporary spay and neuter clinics, reduce the spread of rabies, and work to create the conditions for long-term, community-led sustainable animal health services.

About the Northern Animal Health Initiative (NAHI)

VWB’s NAHI program is focused on increasing access to animal health services in the Canadian North by providing services and resources to strengthen capacity in remote communities in Nunavut and the Northwest Territories. VWB develops partnerships with remote communities in the Canadian territories upon their invitation. Together, they work to identify needs and build a plan with community representatives and leadership to strengthen local capacity to address animal care needs year-round. This includes offering annual temporary veterinary clinics with a team of volunteers. VWB’s goal is to build a sustainable framework that will create the conditions for lasting, community-driven animal health.
